Idaho controlled hunt applications for moose, bighorn sheep, and mountain goat open April 1

LEWISTON, ID — Hunters across Idaho will be able to begin applying for some of the state’s most sought-after big game tags starting April 1, according to Idaho Fish and Game.

The application period for controlled hunts for moose, bighorn sheep, and mountain goat opens April 1 and runs through April 30. Applicants must have a valid 2026 Idaho hunting or combination license to apply.

Hunters can submit applications online, at Fish and Game offices, through licensed vendors, or by phone. Both residents and nonresidents are eligible to apply, though nonresident tags are capped at no more than 10% for each species.

Applicants are required to pay both an application fee and the full tag fee at the time of submission. Fees include $16.75 for residents and $45.75 for nonresidents, in addition to total tag costs that range from $183.50 to $216.50 for residents, depending on price lock status, and $2,672.50 for nonresidents.

Only one application may be submitted per person for either moose, bighorn sheep, or mountain goat. Those who apply for one of these species will not be eligible for most controlled hunt drawings for deer, elk, or pronghorn during the same year.

Drawing results are expected to be available online in early June. Tag fees will be refunded to unsuccessful applicants, though license and application fees are nonrefundable.

According to Fish and Game, these hunts are among Idaho’s most coveted opportunities, with high success rates. In 2025, reported success rates were 87% for moose, up to 81% for Rocky Mountain bighorn sheep, and 100% for mountain goats.

Officials also noted that these controlled hunt tags cannot be transferred by a parent or grandparent to a minor. Additional information, including season rules and application details, is available through Idaho Fish and Game.
