ARLINGTON, TX – The unranked LC State Men’s Tennis team pulled off a major upset at the Texas Wesleyan Invitational on Friday night with a 4-3 victory over No. 12 Williams Woods (Mo.). Freshman Pablo Herrera clinched the final point after a battle in the top singles spot. Three of the four Warrior points were won by first-year players.
LC State was behind 1-0 after doubles play with WWU taking the top two matches. Juan Pablo Naranjo and Austin Swing picked up a 7-6 (15-13) win in No. 3 doubles.
Freshman Cesar Coloma had the quickest singles win for the Warriors with a 6-3, 6-3 victory in the No. 6 spot.
The Warriors took the top three singles matches to complete the win. All three lost their first sets before battling back. Giacomo Moreira outlasted his opponent who retired due to injury in No. 2 singles (2-6, 6-4, 2-1). Nell Rollin dropped his first frame 6-1 and rallied to take No. 3 singles 1-6, 7-5, 6-2.
Herrera clinched the upset for the Warrior men. After a 6-1 loss in set one, he edged his opponent 7-6 in the second. After a lengthy battle, the freshman sealed the victory with his 1-6, 7-6, 6-4 win in the top singles spot on a serve his opponent could not return.
