PULLMAN, WA – The City of Pullman continues to make plans for the long proposed third fire station and a new police station.
The city’s Capital Improvement Program Committee is meeting this week to begin its annual review of the list of proposed projects for the next six years.
A proposed third City of Pullman Fire Department station continues to be on the list. The project first appeared nearly a decade ago when voters approved a property tax increase for a 10.5 million dollar bond. That bond included half a million dollars to buy land for a third fire station.
The project has yet to move forward since a majority of Pullman voters agreed to help pay for the new facility. For the past few years city officials have discussed leasing a site near the Washington State University golf course for fire station three. That location has fallen through and WSU Pullman Chancellor Dave Cillay has stated that a new campus location on the Moscow-Pullman Highway is now being considered.
The current plan for fire station three expects design and construction at 9.5 million dollars. CIP documents don’t include a budget item for land acquisition. The paperwork does schedule construction to begin in 2028. The CIP list contains a plan to start buying apparatus for fire station three. It calls for spending half a million dollars for what’s indicated to be a 6th ambulance. Another item proposes spending nearly one million dollars for another city wildland firefighting brush truck.
The CIP list is bringing to light a new development regarding the old Pullman city hall building downtown. In the past city officials mentioned possibly selling the former city hall next to the police station. In recent years some Pullman PD offices have moved across the parking lot to old city hall. The construction long-term plan calls for about 70,000 dollars for remodeling PD offices and funding an upgrade to the PD’s workout gym in the building. City of Pullman Spokeswoman Meghan Ferrin confirms with Pullman Radio News that there is currently no plan to sell the old city hall.
The Pullman PD’s long planned for new police station remains in the CIP. The project would cost nearly 10 million dollars with construction scheduled for 2028. Officials haven’t determined the location for a new police station. Documents do indicate that a voter approved bond would possibly be needed to help pay for the project.
A new facility construction plan to remodel and expand Neill Public Library has been added to the CIP. That project would cost 8.4 million dollars. The documents schedule construction for Neill Library in 2028.
The City of Pullman’s CIP Committee will spend the next few months going over the six year construction plan before sending it to city council.
