CLARKSTON, WA – Asotin County Fire District #1 Firefighters attacked three grass fires along Down River Road, just east of Redwolf Bridge on Saturday.
Firefighters were dispatched to the area at 7:20 p.m. Saturday evening.
According to Asotin County Fire District #1, a truck pulling a trailer was throwing sparks into the dry grass along State Highway 128 and ignited 3 different fires within a short distance of each other. Nez Perce County Sheriff’s Deputies were able to stop the vehicle in Idaho before it caused more fires.
Asotin County Fire District #1 Chief Noel Hardin stated it was fortunate the fires started on the south side of the highway. Hardin said if the fire would have been on the opposite side of the road it could have climbed up the hillside rapidly.
Hardin added the fire conditions in the valley are borderline extreme and this fire is a perfect example that a little spark can cause big issues.
