BOISE, ID – As Idahoans prepare for summer travel, gas prices are offering some short-term relief. According to AAA, the average price for a gallon of regular gasoline in Idaho is $3.29 as of June 9, down about 1.5 cents from last week and 35 cents less than this time last year.
Nationwide, prices have followed a similar trend, with the U.S. average also down 1.5 cents to $3.12 per gallon—32 cents cheaper than a year ago. Despite the decline, Idaho has moved up to 8th place among the states with the highest fuel prices.
AAA Idaho reports that increased gasoline supplies, decreased demand, and high refinery production are all helping to moderate prices. The U.S. Energy Information Administration noted a 5-million-barrel increase in gasoline stocks and a one-million-barrel-per-day drop in demand. Refineries are currently operating at more than 93% capacity.
Crude oil prices are also contributing to the trend. West Texas Intermediate crude is trading around $65 per barrel, which is $3 higher than a month ago but still $13 below the price from the same time last year.
“It’s good to get another week of relief on gas prices,” said AAA Idaho Public Affairs Director Matthew Conde. “But filling up is likely to become a more expensive proposition with kids out of school and summer vacations in full swing. And then there’s the 4th of July, which will be here before you know it.”
Here are the average gas prices in select Idaho cities as of June 9:
- Boise: $3.20
- Coeur d’Alene: $3.31
- Franklin: $3.24
- Idaho Falls: $3.23
- Lewiston: $3.33
- Pocatello: $3.25
- Rexburg: $3.22
- Twin Falls: $3.32
