Deadly Crime Spree Spans Two States, Ends in Officer-Involved Shooting Near Spokane

SPOKANE VALLEY, WA – A violent multi-jurisdictional crime spree involving armed carjackings, a fatal shooting, and multiple injuries ended Saturday morning when the suspect was fatally shot by law enforcement at the intersection of Trent Avenue and Pines Road in Spokane Valley.

The incident began around 8:30 a.m. in the 16000 block of East Sprague Avenue, where Spokane County Sheriff’s Deputies responded to a reported carjacking involving a man armed with a rifle and handgun. The suspect stole a Dodge Challenger from a man and his daughter before fleeing at high speeds—reaching an estimated 140 mph—eastbound on I-90 toward Idaho.

Deputies lost sight of the vehicle near the Idaho state line. Moments later, Kootenai County Sheriff’s Office (KCSO) received reports of a shooting and another carjacking at the Liberty Stop-N-Go at 6902 W Seltice Way in Stateline, Idaho. Investigators say the suspect struck a motorcyclist on Seltice Way, then shot and killed a man in the Stop-N-Go parking lot before stealing another vehicle and fleeing back into Washington.

The motorcyclist sustained moderate injuries and was transported to a local hospital.

After crossing back into Spokane County, the suspect reportedly attempted yet another carjacking near N. McKinzie Road and E. Wellesley Avenue, discharging his weapon during the attempt. He eventually stole a dark gray truck and continued westbound on East Trent Avenue, where he was seen firing a rifle out the window at pursuing officers.

Washington State Patrol Troopers were already at the intersection of Trent and Pines investigating a separate crash when they were alerted to the danger approaching. The suspect collided with a citizen’s vehicle and a WSP patrol car, exited the stolen vehicle while armed, and was subsequently shot by responding law enforcement. He was pronounced deceased at the scene.

The Spokane Independent Investigative Response Team (SIIR) has taken over the investigation into the officer-involved shooting. The Spokane Police Department is serving as the lead agency for the SIIR Team.

The Kootenai County Sheriff’s Office is handling the homicide and carjackings that occurred in Idaho. Investigators from both states are working collaboratively to piece together the suspect’s movements and actions across the two-county rampage.

Authorities have not yet released the name of the deceased suspect, and the identity of the deputy involved in the shooting will be released at a later time. The case will be forwarded to the Spokane County Prosecutor’s Office for review once the investigation is complete.
