Asotin County Sheriff’s Office Joins National Crackdown on Impaired Boating During Operation Dry Water

ASOTIN, WA — The Asotin County Sheriff’s Office will take part in the national Operation Dry Water campaign from July 4 through July 6, aiming to prevent alcohol- and drug-related boating incidents through increased enforcement and public education.

The annual campaign, coordinated by the National Association of State Boating Law Administrators (NASBLA) in partnership with the U.S. Coast Guard, brings together law enforcement agencies across the country to raise awareness about the risks of impaired boating.

“Boating safety starts with awareness and preparation,” said Sgt. Cory Kingsbury of the Asotin County Sheriff’s Office. “Operation Dry Water gives us an opportunity to engage directly with the boating community about the dangers of impaired operation and the importance of responsible choices on the water.”

According to national statistics, alcohol remains the leading known contributing factor in recreational boating fatalities. Impaired operation—whether from alcohol, prescription medication, or illegal substances—can drastically impair a boater’s judgment, coordination, and reaction time.

During last year’s campaign, law enforcement officers nationwide removed 584 impaired operators from the water. This year, the Asotin County Sheriff’s Office will work alongside other agencies to patrol local waterways, visit marinas, and educate boaters about sober practices and life jacket use.

Officials also emphasized that even when a boat operator remains sober, alcohol consumption by passengers can still lead to unsafe conditions. As the busy holiday weekend approaches, the Sheriff’s Office is urging the public to remain sober and alert on the water.
