CLARKSTON, WA – A 38-year-old man is facing multiple charges after allegedly breaking into RVs stored on secured city property at the Port of Clarkston.
According to a probable cause affidavit, Kayleb L. Hutchins was arrested Tuesday after police responded to reports of a trespasser at a fenced RV storage lot near 14th Street. The lot, surrounded by barbed wire and marked with “No Trespassing” signs, is used by the City of Clarkston to store non-compliant vehicles.
Security footage from early that morning reportedly showed a man matching Hutchins’ appearance entering the property and spending approximately 20 minutes near two RVs. Officers later discovered padlocks had been removed from the RV doors, which had been opened. Debris and scattered belongings were found at the scene, although it was unclear what, if anything, had been taken.
Later that afternoon, Hutchins was spotted again near the lot. He allegedly fled toward the Snake River as police approached and was eventually located hiding near a crane at the port.
According to police, a search of the area along Hutchins’ escape route uncovered a prescription pill bottle containing Dicyclomine, a medication that did not belong to him, along with an identification card that was not issued in his name. Both items were placed into evidence.
Hutchins allegedly confirmed to police he was the individual seen in the surveillance video but claimed he was using the property as a shortcut to reach the river. He admitted to opening one RV door, stating he saw no one inside and then left.
Hutchins was booked into the Asotin County Jail on charges of first-degree vehicle prowl, first-degree criminal trespass, third-degree theft, and possession of a legend drug without a prescription. He remained in custody as of Thursday morning. He appeared in court on Wednesday and bond was set at $35,000.
