KAMIAH, ID — A late-night traffic stop attempt in Kamiah escalated into a high-speed pursuit Thursday, ending with an arrest west of Orofino after spike strips and a pit maneuver brought the fleeing vehicle to a halt.
According to the Lewis County Sheriff’s Office, the incident began around 9:09 p.m. on June 26, when a deputy attempted to stop a silver minivan with no headlights on near the intersection of Third and Idaho Street in Kamiah. The vehicle accelerated westbound on U.S. Highway 12, reportedly reaching speeds up to 78 mph while driving in the wrong lane of traffic.
Deputies say the driver, later identified as Brenna L. Clarke of Oregon, narrowly avoided several head-on collisions during the pursuit. Additional units from the Lewis County Sheriff’s Office and the Clearwater County Sheriff’s Office joined the chase near the Greer Bridge.
The suspect vehicle nearly struck a guardrail near milepost 51 before continuing toward Orofino. Orofino Police deployed spike strips near milepost 44, successfully deflating the vehicle’s tires. Despite slowing to under 15 mph, the van did not come to a stop until a Clearwater County deputy executed a low-speed PIT maneuver and Orofino Police boxed in the vehicle.
Authorities say Clarke refused to exit the vehicle and was forcibly removed before being taken into custody. She was charged with felony eluding and driving under the influence.
No injuries to deputies or bystanders were reported. Clarke was medically evaluated before being transported to jail.
The Lewis County Sheriff’s Office expressed appreciation for the assistance provided by Orofino Police, the Clearwater County Sheriff’s Office, and Idaho State Police in safely resolving the incident.
