MOUNTAIN HOME, ID — A 62-year-old man was airlifted to Boise in stable condition Monday after his vehicle was struck by a train in what Elmore County authorities describe as an attempted suicide.
According to the Elmore County Sheriff’s Office, deputies were dispatched at approximately 11:20 a.m. on June 30 to the railroad crossing on Simco Road, south of the tracks. The investigation determined that the man had parked his vehicle on the tracks in the path of an oncoming train.
The train collided with the vehicle, pushing it to the south side of the tracks. Emergency responders were able to extricate the driver and transport him by air ambulance for medical treatment.
The train involved was carrying hazardous materials. Union Pacific Railroad crews inspected the train and confirmed that no rail cars were damaged and all hazardous materials remained contained. The Simco Road crossing was closed for several hours as railroad officials and deputies conducted their investigation and safety checks.
The Elmore County Sheriff’s Office is urging the public to seek help if they or someone they know is experiencing a mental health crisis. The Idaho Crisis & Suicide Hotline can be reached by dialing 988 or visiting idahocrisis.org.
