Crews Gain Ground on Fire Set by Firefighter Shooting Suspect

COEUR D’ALENE, ID  Fire crews held the Nettleton Gulch Fire within its 38-acre footprint Monday, establishing 15% containment as suppression efforts continued near the Canfield Mountain area. There are no evacuations in effect and no structures at risk, officials said.

The fire, which began June 29, is the same incident where a gunman opened fire on responding firefighters, killing two and injuring another.

Crews are continuing to install hose lays along the fire’s edge to improve water access and aid containment. The fire is burning through steep terrain with heavy timber, posing hazards such as falling trees, rolling logs, and unstable ground. Four falling modules—two-person teams responsible for felling hazardous trees—are working on site.

A Temporary Flight Restriction remains in place over Canfield Mountain to prevent interference with firefighting and law enforcement operations. “If you fly, we can’t,” officials said in a statement.

The fire is burning on Forest Service land under the protection of the Idaho Department of Lands. Several public lands and trails have been closed for safety and access, including Forest Service areas west of Fernan Road (FSR 268), west of FSR 1525 and south of Yellow Banks Creek, and south of Hayden Lake. FSR 268 and FSR 1535 remain open.

According to Kootenai County Sheriff Bob Norris, 20-year-old Wess Roley intentionally set the fire and ambushed emergency responders. Gunfire broke out around 2 p.m. Sunday, shortly after crews arrived at the scene. Roley was later found dead with a firearm nearby.

“We do believe that the suspect started the fire, and we do believe that it was an ambush and it was intentional,” Norris said Sunday. “These firefighters did not have a chance.”
