SPOKANE VALLEY, WA — Spokane County Sheriff’s deputies recovered a stolen vehicle within minutes of the theft being reported on Sunday morning, June 29, arresting a 35-year-old man now facing multiple charges.
At around 5:45 a.m., Spokane Regional Emergency Communications (SREC) broadcast a vehicle theft report involving a red 1991 Honda Civic wagon last seen leaving the 12600 block of East Broadway Avenue. The suspect was described as a male wearing a hoodie with a “blotted” design.
A nearby Spokane Valley deputy spotted a matching vehicle traveling north on Pines Road near Mansfield Avenue shortly after the alert. After confirming identifying features and license plate details, the deputy initiated a traffic stop near East Grace Avenue. Another deputy positioned a marked patrol vehicle in front of the Honda to prevent escape.
The driver, later identified as Yuriy V. Siriy, complied with commands and was taken into custody without incident. Deputies noted that Siriy was wearing black nitrile gloves and had a ski mask around his neck despite the mild 62-degree temperature. A knife was found during a frisk.
Siriy told deputies that he had been riding a scooter when a man he only knew as “Jordan” offered him the Honda to drive. He claimed the gloves were to keep his hands warm, a claim deputies challenged given the gloves’ unsuitability for warmth.
The vehicle’s owner arrived on scene and confirmed he did not know Siriy or anyone named “Jordan,” and that the car keys had been in his pocket when the vehicle was taken. Inside the vehicle, deputies found a key ring with several shaved keys, a known tool used to start older vehicles with worn ignitions.
During a further search, deputies located ball bearings, a crowbar, and additional tools commonly associated with vehicle theft in Siriy’s possession.
Siriy was arrested and booked into the Spokane County Jail for Theft of a Motor Vehicle. He is also being held on unrelated charges including Identity Theft in the First and Second Degree (five counts), Theft in the First Degree, and Possession of Stolen Property in the Second Degree (five counts).
Spokane County Superior Court Commissioner E. Cruz set Siriy’s bond at $45,000 during a court hearing the following day. He remains in custody.
