PORT TOWNSEND, WA – A black-tailed deer fawn is safe after falling into a sinkhole on a vacant lot in Port Townsend.

A neighbor heard the fawn crying and contacted the Washington Department of Fish and Wildlife. Officers arrived to find the animal stuck and unable to climb out on its own. WDFW Police Officer Hillman, Wildlife Conflict Specialist Janowski, and Wildlife Conflict Technician Wheeler worked together to lift the fawn to safety.

The fawn was wet but otherwise unharmed. Once released, it ran to its mother and sibling and immediately began nursing.

The property owner was not aware of the sinkhole and plans to have it filled.

WDFW reminds the public not to approach or handle wild animals, even if they appear to be in distress. Only permitted wildlife rehabilitators are allowed to care for injured or stranded animals.
