OLYMPIA, WA — Pet owners across the country will begin to see clearer and more informative labels on their pet food, thanks to a new rule that goes into effect on July 7, 2025. The Washington State Department of Agriculture (WSDA) is helping inform consumers about these changes, which are part of the nationwide Pet Food Label Modernization (PFLM) effort.
The updated labels are designed to look and function more like human food labels, making it easier for pet owners to understand nutritional information. Key changes include:
-
Simplified nutrition facts panels that resemble those found on human foods
-
Clear calorie counts and identification of life stage appropriateness
-
Consistent labeling formats across dog, cat, and specialty pet foods
-
Optional safe handling icons to help ensure food safety
-
More specific product descriptions, such as whether the item is a complete food or a supplement
The WSDA says the new labels will help consumers make more informed decisions and ensure their pets’ dietary needs are met.
While the labeling rule takes effect this summer, pet food companies will have until July 1, 2030 to fully comply. During that time, both old and new label formats may be found on store shelves.
