Search for Travis Decker in Sawtooth National Forest Ends After Misidentification

BOISE, ID – Law enforcement has ended the search for fugitive Travis Decker in the Sawtooth National Forest after identifying a hiker previously believed to be Decker.

Earlier this week, the U.S. Marshals Service Greater Idaho Fugitive Task Force received a tip from a family who reported seeing a man matching Decker’s description in the Bear Creek area of the forest. The individual was described as a white male between 5’8″ and 5’10”, with dark features, a beard, and tattoos—similar to Decker’s known appearance.

On Tuesday afternoon, task force members located the man in question. After interviewing the cooperative individual, investigators confirmed he had been hiking in the Bear Creek area over the weekend and was not Travis Decker.

As a result, authorities have stopped their search in the Sawtooth National Forest and are now demobilizing resources from the area.

Decker is wanted by the Chelan County Sheriff’s Office in Washington for three counts of murder and three counts of kidnapping related to the deaths of his three children, ages 5, 8, and 9, on May 30, 2025.

U.S. Marshal Brent Bunn expressed appreciation for the public’s help and thanked numerous partner agencies that supported the search effort, including the Ada County Sheriff’s Office, Nampa Police Department, Caldwell Police Department, Bureau of Land Management, Camas County Sheriff’s Office, Blaine County Sheriff’s Office, U.S. Forest Service, U.S. Customs and Border Protection, Idaho Department of Correction, Coeur d’Alene Police Department, and the FBI.

Anyone with information on Decker’s whereabouts is urged to contact the U.S. Marshals Service at 1-800-336-0102 or submit tips at www.usmarshals.gov/tips.
