CLARKSTON, WA – A grass fire that erupted Saturday evening in west Clarkston came dangerously close to several homes along Dustan Loop but was quickly contained by local fire crews.

The fire began just before 9 p.m. and spread rapidly through tall, dry grass. Fire units from Asotin County Fire District #1, along with support from the Clarkston Fire Department and Lewiston Fire Department, responded immediately to the scene.

Firefighters managed to contain the fire to less than one acre, preventing any damage to nearby properties.

“We were fortunate the wind had calmed down before this fire started,” said Asotin County Fire District #1 Chief Noel Hardin. “If it had been two hours earlier, it would have been a whole different fire.”

No injuries were reported, and the cause has not been determined.
