BOISE, ID – The Idaho Fish and Game Commission has awarded $100,000 in grants to support fish and wildlife conservation and outdoor recreation projects across the state, with several North Idaho organizations among the recipients.
The Commission Challenge Grants, awarded annually in July, are designed to assist nonprofit organizations and regional groups in enhancing habitat, supporting outdoor youth programs, and improving access to recreation.
In North Idaho’s Panhandle and Clearwater regions, local recipients include:
- Idaho Trails Association – awarded $5,000 to maintain backcountry trails in Units 7 and 9, improving hunter access.
- Kootenai Valley Sportsmen and First Hunt Foundation – each awarded $2,500 to co-host a youth pheasant hunting clinic at Boundary-Smith Creek Wildlife Management Area in Boundary County.
- Idaho Trappers Association – received $10,000 for a fisher research project in the Clearwater Region.
Statewide, organizations received funding for a wide range of projects including habitat restoration, trapper education, youth shooting sports, and outdoor skills camps. The largest single grant—$20,000—went to the Henrys Fork Foundation to improve infrastructure at the Chester Dam Access Site.
Commission Challenge Grant applications are accepted each spring, with awards announced during the Commission’s July meeting. Eligible applicants include nonprofits, businesses, and recognized sporting organizations. Matching funds or in-kind support are required.
