Returned Big Game Tags Offer Additional Hunting Opportunities in Idaho Starting Aug. 7

BOISE, ID — Hunters will have another chance to secure big game tags this season, as Idaho Fish and Game opens sales of returned general season tags beginning at 10 a.m. (MDT) on Wednesday, August 7.

These tags, primarily returned by nonresident hunters, will be available for purchase on a first-come, first-served basis through Idaho Fish and Game offices, licensed vendors, online at GoOutdoorsIdaho.com, or by calling 1-800-554-8685.

A list of available tags will be published online at 10 a.m. on August 6 at the department’s Nonresident License and Tag webpage.

Nonresident hunters who have not yet secured a deer or elk tag may be able to purchase one during this sale, subject to existing limits for uncapped elk zones and deer units. Fees for nonresident tags are $351.75 for deer and $651.75 for elk.

Idaho residents may also purchase these returned nonresident tags as second tags. Residents who qualify for the Price Lock discount will pay $301.75 for deer tags and $416.75 for elk tags. Those not eligible for the discount must pay the nonresident rate. Residents can use available deer tags statewide and elk tags in any uncapped zone.

However, certain areas are excluded from the second tag program. No second tags are available for the Elk City elk zone, or for deer units 10, 10A, 12, 16A, 17, 19, and 20.

If a capped zone tag is returned and the cap is not sold out, it can be purchased — but only by residents if it’s a resident tag.

The next scheduled returned tag sale is set for September 18.
