IDFG Closes Craig Mountain Shooting Area, Launches Habitat Projects

CRAIG MOUNTAIN, ID – The Idaho Department of Fish and Game (IDFG) has implemented several fire prevention and habitat restoration efforts on Craig Mountain Wildlife Management Area (WMA) this summer, including the temporary closure of a popular shooting area and the launch of a multi-agency restoration project.

According to IDFG’s August 2025 newsletter, the gate at Gaiser Ranch leading to a frequently used shooting site has been closed due to heightened fire risk. Officials are asking the public to refrain from using firearms behind the gate or in surrounding parking areas as fire conditions remain extreme.

In addition to fireproofing structures and maintaining access routes, IDFG reports that it is collaborating with the Bureau of Land Management and The Nature Conservancy on a multi-year restoration initiative in the Cave Gulch drainage. The project aims to restore old hay fields to native grasslands, improving forage quality and habitat security for wildlife.

Weed management efforts were also conducted this spring, with 400 acres and 15 miles of roadway treated for invasive species such as bur chervil, rush skeletonweed, yellow star-thistle, and oxeye daisy. Officials urge recreationists to check their boots, vehicles, and gear to help prevent the spread of these fast-growing weeds, particularly in the Redbird area and near the Snake River corridor.

Fence repair has continued across the mountain, with about nine miles of boundary fencing repaired or replaced. IDFG reminded the public to stay on designated roads and avoid off-roading, including the use of ATVs, dirt bikes, and e-bikes, which are considered motorized vehicles and are not allowed behind gates or on closed routes.

Later this fall, IDFG will open a firewood permit program on Craig Mountain lands once fire conditions improve. Permits will cost $10 per cord and are limited to five cords per person. Firewood may only be harvested on IDFG-managed land and not on adjoining private, tribal, BLM, or Idaho Department of Lands property.

Community members interested in volunteering for habitat projects or fence removal are encouraged to contact the Clearwater Region office at 208-799-5010.
