TREMONTON, UT – A police officer was killed and another officer critically wounded during a shooting in Tremonton on Sunday night. A sheriff’s deputy and a police service dog were also injured. Authorities say the suspect is now in custody and facing aggravated murder charges.
According to Brigham City Police, the incident began around 9:00 p.m. on August 17 when the Box Elder Communication Center received multiple 911 hang-up calls from a residence near 700 N. 200 E. in Tremonton. A Tremonton Garland Police Department officer responded and began speaking with an occupant of the home about a reported domestic disturbance. While on scene, a man emerged from the residence with a firearm and opened fire, striking and killing the officer.
A second Tremonton Garland officer who responded was also shot by the suspect and critically wounded. A third officer, a Box Elder County Sheriff’s deputy, along with his police service dog, arrived to assist and were also fired upon. The deputy was injured and his K9 was struck by gunfire as well. Both were transported to a veterinary clinic and hospital where they are recovering and in stable condition.
Authorities say the suspect was ultimately convinced to put down his weapon by bystanders and was taken into custody by additional officers. Due to the severity of the incident, SWAT teams cleared the residence to ensure there were no further threats.
The suspect was booked into the Box Elder County Jail on charges of aggravated murder. The Weber County Attorney’s Office is overseeing the ongoing homicide investigation.
Brigham City Police Chief Chad D. Reyes expressed condolences to the families of the officers and K9 involved, stating that their service and sacrifice will be remembered. “Tragedies like these rock an entire community, state, and even nation,” the department said in a statement.
Law enforcement agencies from multiple jurisdictions responded, including the Tremonton Garland Police Department, Box Elder County Sheriff’s Office, and Brigham City Police Department. Officials said they are grateful for the swift coordination across agencies during the incident.
