Suspect Killed in Southern Idaho Officer-Involved Shooting; Homeowner Injured

SHELLEY, ID – A suspect was shot and killed by deputies late Tuesday night following an incident in southern Idaho, according to a joint release from the Bingham and Bonneville County Sheriff’s Offices.

The incident began around 11 p.m. on August 19, when Bingham County deputies were dispatched to an area east of Shelley after receiving a report of shots fired. The reporting party told dispatchers that a homeowner had confronted a suspect attempting to take a 4-wheeler from their property. During the encounter, shots were exchanged, and both the homeowner and the suspect were injured. The suspect then fled on foot.

Deputies responded and requested assistance from nearby law enforcement to establish a perimeter and search for the suspect. Officers from Shelley and Blackfoot police departments, Idaho State Police, and Bonneville County Sheriff’s deputies joined the effort. Shelley Fire and Ambulance personnel transported the homeowner to Eastern Idaho Regional Medical Center in Idaho Falls with a non-life-threatening gunshot wound.

While searching the area, deputies from Bingham and Bonneville counties located the suspect in a field near the residence. Shots were fired by deputies from both agencies. Deputies provided life-saving measures, but the suspect died at the scene.

No law enforcement officers were injured. The area was secured, and Bingham County Sheriff Jeff Gardner requested the East Idaho Critical Incident Team conduct the investigation. The Pocatello Police Department is leading the investigation with assistance from Idaho Falls Police and Idaho State Police.

No additional details are being released at this time.
