KAMIAH, ID – Fire crews responded late Wednesday morning to a fire at the Star Cedar Mill on Highway 12 in Kamiah.
According to Kamiah Fire Chief Billy, firefighters were dispatched to the mill at approximately 11:30 a.m. after reports of a fire inside a hopper. Heavy smoke was visible when crews arrived.
Mill personnel had already begun suppressing the fire before fire units arrived. Kamiah Fire Department responded with Engine 23, Engine 21, Squad 27, and Med 1. Four full-time firefighters were on scene within two minutes, along with one volunteer.
Chief Billy noted that weekday response from volunteers can be limited, but the incident was quickly brought under control. “The fire is under control. It’s out. We’re in the process of finding little hot spots,” he said in a video update.
Crews remained at the scene for overhaul operations to ensure the fire was fully extinguished and expected to release the site back to the mill by about 1:00 p.m. No injuries were reported.
