LAPWAI, ID – Nez Perce Tribal Police Chief Mark Bensen has been installed as a Member-at-Large on the 2025–2026 Board of Governors for the Small & Rural Law Enforcement Executives’ Association (SRLEEA).
Chief Bensen said it is a privilege to represent rural and tribal agencies on a national level, noting that SRLEEA speaks for more than 90 percent of law enforcement agencies in the United States, most of which serve small towns, rural counties, and tribal lands.
“This Board works to ensure our communities have the resources, training, and support needed to keep both officers and the public safe,” Bensen said. “I look forward to advocating for the unique needs of rural and tribal policing at every level of government.”
The announcement came during a difficult week for the law enforcement community, following the deaths of Sgt. Lee Sorensen and Officer Eric Estrada in Tremonton, Utah. Both were killed in the line of duty, while a deputy and a K-9 partner were wounded. Bensen extended condolences and support to their families, fellow officers, and community.
SRLEEA’s mission is to provide advocacy, training, and a unified voice for small, rural, and tribal law enforcement leaders. The association also focuses on strengthening partnerships, addressing resource challenges, and ensuring local agencies are heard in national discussions on public safety.
Chief Bensen emphasized that his role on the Board will not only represent the Nez Perce Tribal Police Department but also honor its mission to protect and serve the community with integrity, courage, and commitment.
