REDMOND, WA – Redmond police arrested 18 individuals during a demonstration at the Microsoft campus on Wednesday.
Officers were dispatched at approximately 12:15 p.m. to a large gathering of protesters in the Microsoft courtyard. Police initially attempted to have the protesters leave, but the crowd resisted and became aggressive.
During the protest, several individuals poured paint over the Microsoft sign and on the ground. Others blocked a pedestrian bridge and used stolen tables and chairs from vendors to form a barrier.
The 18 individuals were taken into custody on charges including trespassing, malicious mischief, resisting arrest, and obstruction. No injuries were reported.
The protest was organized by the group No Azure For Apartheid, which is composed of current and former Microsoft employees. The group said it was protesting Microsoft’s work in supplying artificial intelligence technology to the Israeli military, claiming the technology is “being used to surveil, starve and kill Palestinians.”
The Redmond Police Department thanked the Washington State Patrol, Bellevue Police Department, and Kirkland Police Department for assisting during the incident. The investigation is ongoing.
