POTLATCH, ID – Crews continue to battle the White Pine Fire northeast of Potlatch, which has burned 792 acres and is 10% contained as of Tuesday. About 220 personnel are assigned to the fire.
Firefighters are working to strengthen containment lines, mop up spot fires, and improve road access with the help of heavy equipment and aircraft support. Crews are also scouting for new opportunities to contain the fire along Piah Creek and in areas east and west of Pub and East Fork Meadow Creeks.
Weather conditions remain a challenge. Temperatures are expected to reach the upper 70s with low humidity, and gusty winds may drive fire activity, though a smoke inversion could help moderate spread. Storms moving into the region bring additional concerns of lightning and unpredictable winds.
A Temporary Flight Restriction remains in place within a 10-mile radius of the fire. The Latah County Sheriff’s Office has issued a standing evacuation status for the area since September 1. Recreationists are advised that several trails, including Giant White Pine Trail (#224), East Trail #228, and Trail #26 from White Pine Campground to FS Road 377, are closed.
Air quality across north-central Idaho is mostly in the moderate range, with periods of haze expected in Potlatch, Moscow, Kamiah, Grangeville, Reubens, and St. Maries. Residents sensitive to smoke are encouraged to limit prolonged outdoor activity.
