LEWISTON, ID – The City of Lewiston and Nez Perce County have reached an agreement to maintain uninterrupted solid waste disposal services for county residents while long-term solutions are developed.
Nez Perce County originally planned for its residents to begin hauling waste directly to the Asotin County Landfill starting October 1. However, concerns raised by Asotin County officials regarding capacity and traffic at the site prompted the county to request continued access to the Lewiston Transfer Station.
Lewiston Mayor Johnson formally responded to the request on Tuesday, agreeing to extend transfer station services under several conditions designed to protect both residents and city operations.
Key provisions include:

Proof of residency: County residents must continue to show documentation of residency and service address before disposing of solid waste. Officials noted a potential long-term solution would be a permit system issued by the Board of County Commissioners.

Cost-sharing: Nez Perce County will continue paying Lewiston for disposal services based on its share of waste volume. Payments will also include hauling and landfill costs at the Asotin County Regional Landfill.

Portable scales: With approval from the Transfer Station Supervisor, the county may install truck scales to weigh loads. Nez Perce County will cover any installation and operating costs.

New agreement: A formal contract covering all services must be finalized and signed by December 31, 2025.
“The City of Lewiston is committed to working with our neighbors in Nez Perce County while also protecting the integrity and sustainability of City operations,” Mayor Johnson said in a statement.
City officials emphasized the importance of reliable, well-managed solid waste services for the region and said they remain focused on developing long-term solutions.
