LEWISTON – The Lewiston Police Department is warning the public about a rise in fraudulent “kidnapping” scam robo-calls targeting local residents.
According to police, the calls claim that a loved one—often a child—has been kidnapped. The caller then demands immediate payment, typically through wire transfers, mobile payment apps, or gift cards. Officials said the calls are designed to create fear and urgency in order to trick victims into sending money.
Police emphasized that no actual kidnappings have been linked to the calls. Scammers frequently use caller ID “spoofing” to make the calls appear as though they are coming from a local or trusted number and often discourage victims from contacting law enforcement or family members.
The department advises residents who receive such calls to remain calm, avoid giving out personal or financial information, and attempt to contact their family members directly to confirm their safety.
Anyone receiving a call is asked to report it to the Lewiston Police Department at 208-746-0171. If there is an immediate danger, call 911.
