University of Idaho Theatre Arts Launches First Bite New Play Series with Student-Written Works

MOSCOW, ID – The University of Idaho Department of Theatre Arts is presenting two original play readings this fall as part of the First Bite New Play Series, which showcases scripts written and directed by Master of Fine Arts students.

The series, produced by Kellie Stonebrook with technical coordination by Andrew Okerson, will be offered as free online webinars. Department chair and head of dramatic writing Robert Caisley said the event gives audiences a rare look into the development of new works.

“Working on a new play is a thrilling, fluid process,” Caisley said. “Unlike time-tested classics, these works are still finding their shape. By joining us for this initial developmental stage, our students and audiences alike share a rare opportunity to witness how a play evolves between page and performance. Audience feedback is vital to that journey.”

The series includes:

  • “Slingtown” — Written by Abigail Thomson and directed by Daniel Lee White, the story follows a pinball prodigy in 1970s Indiana who challenges a town ban on the game. Readings will be held at 5 p.m. Friday, Oct. 3, and 2 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 4.
  • “Polyhedral” — Written by d.s.Levy and directed by Alana Rader, the play centers on a Dungeons and Dragons night that turns into a crisis when a dungeon master goes missing. Readings will take place at 5 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 4, and 2 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 5.

Both playwrights expressed excitement about sharing their works. Thomson said she hopes audiences enjoy seeing her play come to life, while Levy emphasized the importance of connection and storytelling.

All readings will be held via Zoom. Registration and details are available at linktr.ee/uidahotheatre.
