Juvenile Suspects Face Charges in Western Washington Swatting Incident

ISSAQUAH, WA – The Issaquah Police Department has submitted charges against two juveniles in connection with a dangerous swatting incident that triggered a large law enforcement response earlier this year.

In April, officers responded to a 911 call reporting a violent domestic situation with a firearm at a residence in the Issaquah Highlands. The report claimed that family members were being threatened inside the home. Police immediately secured the area, but it was quickly determined that no crime had occurred. The resident confirmed the children were out of state at the time, and the call was false.

Detectives launched a months-long investigation using phone forensics, surveillance footage, and multiple search warrants. Investigators determined that the false call was made from a “911-only” phone near the residence. Surveillance video later tied a vehicle to the scene, leading detectives to identify juvenile suspects.

According to police, one juvenile admitted to driving to the location while another used a recently purchased phone to make the false report. The motive was reportedly to target a former girlfriend of one of the juveniles. After the call, the phone was discarded in Lake Sammamish to conceal evidence.

The investigation also revealed a broader campaign of harassment against the victim, including online impersonation, threats, and the release of personal information on social media.

Issaquah Police officials emphasized the seriousness of swatting. “Swatting is not a prank, it’s a dangerous criminal act that puts lives at risk,” said Investigations and Patrol Commander Travis Neese. “These false reports waste emergency resources, traumatize victims, and create potentially deadly situations for officers and innocent bystanders.”

Police Chief Paula Schwan echoed those concerns, stressing that misuse of emergency services endangers the entire community.

Detectives have submitted charges to the King County Juvenile Prosecutor’s Office under RCW 9.61.160, which addresses threats to bomb or injure property.
