Idaho County Rescue Responds to Hiker Near Smith Knob Lookout

IDAHO COUNTY, ID — On Thursday, September 25, 2025, at approximately 2:30 p.m., Idaho County Dispatch received a call from a 56-year-old man from Nampa who was in need of assistance while hiking near Smith Knob Lookout, east of Warren.

The man reported that he was not lost or injured but was unable to walk and believed he might be suffering from heat stroke. He had parked his vehicle at Smith Knob Lookout, located off Little Smith Creek Road.

The Grangeville Mountain Rescue Unit (GMRU) responded to the call, reached the man, and provided him with food and water. After assessing his condition, rescuers were able to side-hill walk him approximately one mile back to his vehicle.

Officials expressed appreciation to GMRU for their quick response and commitment to assisting those in need across Idaho County.
