Extra Patrols Planned for WSU Thanksgiving Travel Period

PULLMAN, WA – The Washington State Patrol (WSP) will be ramping up enforcement efforts during the Thanksgiving holiday travel period as Washington State University (WSU) students hit the road. Emphasis patrols will begin November 20 and run through November 30, with troopers focusing on major travel corridors between Pullman and the rest of the state.

WSP troopers from District 4 (serving Spokane, Whitman, and Adams counties) and District 6 (serving Grant and Kittitas counties) will specifically target unsafe driving behaviors including excessive speed, distracted or impaired driving, and other violations commonly linked to collisions.

Motorists can expect an increased law enforcement presence on State Routes 26 and 195, as well as Interstate 90 over Snoqualmie Pass. Officials are urging travelers to monitor posted speed limits and be prepared for variable winter driving conditions. Up-to-date road and weather information is available through the Washington State Department of Transportation (WSDOT) website and mobile apps.

In addition to enforcement, officials are encouraging all drivers—especially students traveling long distances—to properly prepare for winter road conditions. Recommendations include equipping vehicles with emergency kits containing food, water, warm clothing, blankets, and flares. Ensuring vehicle maintenance—such as fluid levels, battery strength, and tire condition—is also strongly advised. All-season or snow tires and tire chains may be required for mountain travel.

“We appreciate everyone’s help and diligence to ensure that we have a safe and enjoyable Thanksgiving this year,” said WSP District 4 Commander Captain Jeff Otis.

The WSP, WSU, and local partners remain committed to making holiday travel as safe as possible for students and their families.
