COTTONWOOD, ID – The City of Cottonwood has issued an emergency drinking water warning after tests confirmed the presence of E. coli bacteria in the city’s water supply.
According to a notice from the Cottonwood Water Department, the bacteria were found during routine testing on November 7. E. coli contamination can cause illness, particularly in infants, young children, the elderly, and individuals with weakened immune systems.
Residents are advised not to drink tap water without boiling it first. Water should be brought to a rolling boil for at least one minute and allowed to cool before use. Boiled or bottled water should be used for all purposes, including drinking, brushing teeth, washing dishes, making ice, and preparing food.
Officials say the contamination may have been caused by runoff entering the water source following recent rains, a break in the distribution system, or a malfunction in the water treatment process.
The city is currently chlorinating and flushing the water system and expects the issue to be resolved within five days. Updates will be provided once follow-up tests confirm the water is safe to drink.
Anyone experiencing symptoms such as diarrhea, nausea, cramps, or headaches is advised to contact a healthcare provider, as these may be signs of infection.
