Hunter Dies During Elk Hunt in Central Idaho’s Backcountry

BOISE COUNTY, ID – Boise County Search and Rescue, the Boise County Sheriff’s Office, and a U.S. Forest Service law enforcement officer responded early Thursday morning to a report of a hunter who died while on an elk hunt in a remote area near Bald Mountain.

According to Boise County Search and Rescue, the incident occurred on November 6, 2025. Around 3:00 a.m., a 911 text message was sent reporting that a hunter was down and in need of assistance. The group had been attempting to return to their camp while packing out an elk harvested the previous day.

Emergency medical services were paged by State Communications, but due to the rugged terrain and remote location, ambulance crews were unable to reach the scene. The hunter’s companions initiated CPR, but despite their efforts, the man did not survive.

At approximately 9:00 a.m., Boise County Search and Rescue teams began recovery operations. Members reached the site by dirt bike, where they located the deceased hunter. With assistance from two Boise County Sheriff’s deputies and a Forest Service law enforcement officer, the body was safely transported out of the area and turned over to the county coroner at the Boise County Sheriff’s Office.

Boise County Search and Rescue expressed condolences to the family and friends of the deceased and reminded outdoor recreationists of the challenges posed by Idaho’s backcountry.

“The further you go into the mountains, the more difficult it can be for first responders to reach you in an emergency,” the agency said, encouraging hunters and hikers to be mindful of their physical condition, ensure reliable communication, and prepare for cold and wet weather.

Boise County Search and Rescue emphasized that it remains ready to assist those in need across the county’s mountainous terrain.
