MOSCOW, ID — The University of Idaho Dance Program will present the UIdaho Dance Ensemble in its annual fall concert, Uncharted, at 7:30 p.m. on Thursday and Friday, Nov. 20–21, at the Hartung Theater.
The production features new works choreographed by faculty members Colleen Bialas, Melanie Meenan, and Rhea Speights, alongside a piece restaged by guest artist Samuel Hobbs, artistic director of Portland’s Push/Fold dance company. The performance will showcase the creativity and growth of U of I student dancers while marking milestones in the university’s dance history — 115 years of dance instruction and over 50 years of offering a dance degree program.
Hobbs’ contribution, Ozymandias, explores identity, heritage, and community through powerful, athletic movement. His weeklong residency included rehearsals with nine student performers and workshops open to all U of I students.
Speights, a new faculty member, choreographed Anam Cara, a trio inspired by the Celtic concept of “soul friend,” performed by students Megan Chenault, Scarlett Cromwell, and Rosalyn Gardner. She also restaged her award-winning solo This Place, originally created in 2008, now shared between dancers Gardner and Hannah Turner.
Bialas created a new contemporary ballet quartet performed by Emerson Carper, Cromwell, Leora Jones, and Anna Layman. Meenan collaborated with seven students in a piece examining resistance and support, and later joined Speights in co-choreographing a large ensemble work featuring 17 dancers.
“Uncharted provides audiences the opportunity to chart their own meaning through the blending of dance movement, sound, and theatrical lighting,” Meenan said.
Tickets range from $10 to $18 and are available at uitickets.com.
