LEMHI COUNTY, ID – A 75-year-old woman died Monday after falling into the Salmon River, according to the Lemhi County Sheriff’s Office.
Deputies said they received a report around 4:23 p.m. on November 10 of an overturned boat in Lemhi County, north of Salmon. The caller reported that two people had gone into the water and one was unresponsive. CPR was in progress when emergency services were dispatched.
First responders located the pair on the east shoreline near Lindberg Lane. The two were identified as Arlen O’Brien, 76, and Judy O’Brien, 75, both of Carmen, Idaho. Lifesaving efforts continued on Judy O’Brien, who was transferred to a Salmon ambulance and taken to Steele Memorial Medical Center, where she was later pronounced dead.
The investigation determined that the couple had been fishing from a drift boat when it became lodged on rocks. While trying to free the boat, both fell into the river. Neither was wearing a life jacket, and they were in the water for approximately five to ten minutes before reaching the bank.
Authorities later determined the boat had not overturned. It was recovered the following day by the Lemhi County Sheriff’s Office and Salmon Search & Rescue.
The incident has been ruled an accidental drowning. The Lemhi County Sheriff’s Office extended condolences to the O’Brien family.
