Federal Court Dismisses Satanic Temple Challenge to Idaho Abortion Laws

BOISE, ID – Attorney General Raúl Labrador has announced that a federal court has dismissed a lawsuit filed by The Satanic Temple challenging Idaho’s abortion laws, marking a decisive legal win for the state.

U.S. District Judge David C. Nye ruled that The Satanic Temple’s claims were legally unsound and could not be corrected through amendment, dismissing the case with prejudice. The lawsuit, filed in 2022, argued that Idaho’s pro-life laws violated constitutional protections, asserting the laws constituted a “taking” of pregnant women’s wombs, made pregnant women “slaves,” and infringed on religious freedoms.

Judge Nye initially dismissed the case in 2024, finding the group lacked legal standing and describing its arguments as “absurd” and “outlandish.” After an appeal to the Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals, the case was sent back for clarification on whether the claims could be amended. Monday’s ruling confirmed the claims could not be salvaged.

“Idaho’s pro-life laws protect both mothers and unborn children, and this decision confirms those protections are constitutionally sound,” Attorney General Labrador said. “The Satanic Temple’s attempt to manufacture constitutional violations out of disagreement with Idaho’s values has been rejected at every level. We’ve defended Idaho’s laws through every stage of this litigation, and we will continue protecting the right of Idaho’s elected representatives to defend life.”
