LEWISTON, ID – The Lewiston Fire Department responded to a structure fire in the 400 block of Preston Avenue at approximately 5:30 a.m. Friday.
Upon arrival, crews found residents standing outside a two-story apartment complex. Firefighters were directed to an apartment on the main floor, where they discovered smoke and heat originating from a stovetop fire. The blaze was quickly extinguished, and crews conducted checks for fire extension and ventilated smoke from the unit.
Residents of the affected apartment were credited with helping contain the fire by closing doors as they evacuated and alerting neighbors to leave the building. The other apartments were cleared and residents were allowed to return once the scene was secured.
The Lewiston Fire Department responded with three structural engines, two ambulances, and one chief officer, bringing a total of 14 personnel to the scene.
The fire was determined to have been caused by unattended cooking on the stovetop. Damage to the apartment and its contents is estimated at approximately $5,000. No injuries were reported among residents or firefighters.
