MOSCOW, ID — The University of Idaho Department of Theatre Arts will stage Jean-Paul Sartre’s iconic existential drama No Exit over two consecutive weekends in December at the Shoup Hall Pocket Playhouse in Moscow.
The production opens with a preview performance at 7:30 p.m. Thursday, Dec. 4, followed by six additional shows:
- 7:30 p.m. Friday, Dec. 5
- 7:30 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 6
- 2 p.m. Sunday, Dec. 7
- 7:30 p.m. Friday, Dec. 12
- 7:30 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 13
- 2 p.m. Sunday, Dec. 14
Department Chair Robert Caisley described the play as “part chess match, part cat-and-mouse chase,” blending sharp humor with the tension of a psychological mystery.
The story centers on two women and one man, condemned to spend eternity together in a single locked room in Hell. With no windows, no mirrors, and lights that never turn off, the characters confront each other—and their own darkest truths—as Sartre explores themes of guilt, jealousy, denial and desire.
Jeremiah Price, a graduate student directing the production, said the play’s examination of human comparison feels increasingly relevant. “It has been my honor to direct this seminal work by a well-known playwright and stage it in an intimate space,” Price said. “The cast has risen to the challenge brilliantly, and audiences will not want to miss seeing them embody these characters.”
Tickets are free for University of Idaho students and range from $6 to $26 for the public. Seating at the Pocket Playhouse is limited, and attendees are encouraged to reserve tickets early at uitickets.com.
