Wellpinit Man Sentenced to 30 Months for Habitual Domestic Violence on Spokane Reservation

WELLPNIT, WA — A Wellpinit man has been sentenced to 30 months in federal prison for assaulting his intimate partner on the Spokane Reservation, according to the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Eastern District of Washington.

U.S. District Judge Thomas O. Rice handed down the sentence on November 6, 2025, against Idris Haith, 47, who was convicted of Domestic Assault by a Habitual Offender in Indian Country. Following his prison term, Haith will serve three years of supervised release.

According to court records, Haith’s partner — a Native American woman with whom he shares several children — called 911 on September 26, 2024, reporting that Haith struck her, choked her, and threatened to kill her during an argument at a residence on the Spokane Indian Reservation. Responding officers observed scratches on the victim’s neck and blood on her lips.

The U.S. Attorney’s Office said Haith’s actions are part of a long pattern of domestic violence involving the same victim. Haith has two prior convictions for assaulting her, issued in Spokane Municipal Court in 2012 and 2014. Under federal law, a person with two prior assault convictions against an intimate partner may be charged as a habitual offender.

Spokane Tribal Police Chief Clint G. Kieffer said the department remains committed to pursuing cases involving violence against Native American women, emphasizing the importance of cooperation among tribal, local, and federal agencies.

U.S. Attorney Pete Serrano said the sentence reflects the serious nature of repeated domestic abuse, noting that such violence is “rarely a single event” and often represents ongoing violations of trust and safety.

The case was investigated by the Spokane Tribal Police Department, the Stevens County Sheriff’s Office, and the FBI. It was prosecuted by Special Assistant U.S. Attorney Michael L. Vander Giessen and Assistant U.S. Attorney Michael J. Ellis.
