BOISE, ID – Idaho Fish and Game has released details on major changes to how nonresident hunters will obtain deer, elk, and other big game tags beginning in 2026. The full press release can be viewed here.
The new system replaces the long-standing first-come, first-served sale with a structured draw intended to reduce congestion and frustration for out-of-state hunters. Under the updated framework, nonresidents must purchase a nonrefundable $185 annual hunting license before entering any 2026 tag drawing.
Once licensed, hunters may apply for deer, elk, and pronghorn controlled hunts, as well as moose, bighorn sheep, and mountain goat tags. Returned or unsold tags may also be available later in the year.
Key Dates for Applicants
- Dec. 5–15, 2025: Application period
- Early January 2026: First draw results
- Jan. 20: Deadline to purchase successful tags (excluding DAV)
- Feb. 5–15: Second application window for remaining tags
- Early March 2026: Second draw results
- March 20: Purchase deadline for all tags, including DAV
Idaho Fish and Game notes that applicants may list up to five hunt choices, and groups of up to four hunters may apply together, provided all hold valid licenses.
Additional Program Notes
- DAV tags: A separate drawing will be conducted for reduced-fee tags.
- Junior mentored hunters: Only need to apply for elk in capped zones; deer and uncapped elk tags remain OTC after the draw.
- Lifetime license holders: Former Idaho residents with lifetime licenses may purchase tags outside nonresident quotas.
The 2026 Nonresident Supplement and updated Big Game Seasons and Rules will be released in October 2025. Idaho Fish and Game encourages hunters to review details and stay updated ahead of the December application window.
