BOISE, ID — Gas prices continue to trend downward nationwide, but Idaho motorists may feel the relief arriving a bit more slowly as the state’s average price remains above the national mark, according to new data from AAA.
The national average for a gallon of regular gasoline has dipped to $3.00 — the lowest point since May 2021. More than two dozen states are already below that threshold, with additional declines expected in the coming weeks. Nationally, prices are seven cents lower than a week ago, four cents below last month, and five cents below this time last year.
In contrast, Idaho’s average currently sits at $3.23 per gallon, reflecting a four-cent decrease from last week and a 14-cent drop from last month. However, Idaho drivers are still paying about 18 cents more per gallon than a year ago.
“If you’re looking for the ‘glass-half-full’ side of things, Utah, which supplies most of our gasoline, is already at $3.06 per gallon,” said Matthew Conde, public affairs director for AAA Idaho. “Our hope is to get quite a bit closer to $3 gasoline as winter sets in.”
Crude oil trends may help push prices downward further. West Texas Intermediate is currently trading near $60 per barrel, and OPEC+ recently confirmed it will maintain current production levels through at least the first quarter of 2026. A continued outlook for global oversupply could drive additional winter price reductions.
Conde suggests motorists continue combining errands where possible. “Keep bundling trips as much as possible, including your holiday shopping,” he said. “Conserving fuel could help put an extra present under the tree.”
