HHS Releases New AI Strategy to Modernize Federal Health Operations

WASHINGTON, D.C. — The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services has released a new artificial intelligence strategy aimed at expanding the use of AI across agency operations, research, and public-health systems. The plan is intended to improve efficiency, support innovation, and strengthen health outcomes as federal agencies adopt emerging technologies.

Developed under Acting Chief Artificial Intelligence Officer Clark Minor, the strategy aligns with federal AI directives and outlines five priorities: strengthening governance and risk management, building user-focused infrastructure, supporting workforce development, improving research standards, and modernizing public-health and care-delivery systems. Officials say these pillars will be updated as technology evolves.

Lawmakers expressed support for the approach, highlighting the need for transparency, strong data protections, and public trust as AI adoption expands. They noted the potential for AI to improve diagnoses, lower costs, and streamline government processes.

The plan also introduces a unified “OneHHS” framework, bringing together divisions such as the CDC, CMS, FDA, and NIH to develop a shared AI infrastructure. The department says the coordinated approach is intended to enhance cybersecurity and reduce duplication.

HHS emphasized that the strategy focuses on internal federal operations and represents the first phase of broader AI integration. Future work will include collaboration with private-sector partners to expand the use of AI in federal health programs.
