ASOTIN, WA — The Asotin Police Department is urging residents to take extra precautions on local roads as winter weather brings snow, ice, and unpredictable driving conditions. In a newly released winter safety advisory, Chief M. Renzelman emphasized that the safest choice during severe weather is often to avoid travel altogether until plows and sanding crews have cleared major routes.
The department notes that for those who must travel, preparation and caution are essential. Drivers are encouraged to slow down, increase following distances, and avoid using cruise control on icy roads. The advisory highlights that even well-equipped vehicles—such as four-wheel and front-wheel drive models—are not immune to winter hazards.
Officials recommend keeping headlights on, maintaining clean windshields, and using low gears to help maintain traction. Motorists are also warned to use extreme caution on bridges, overpasses, and shaded areas, which tend to freeze before other road surfaces. Passing snowplows or sanding trucks is discouraged due to limited visibility and the likelihood of untreated roadway ahead.
The release also includes guidance on how to safely respond if a vehicle begins to skid. Drivers are advised to steer gently in the direction they want the front of the vehicle to go and avoid slamming on the brakes. For vehicles with anti-lock braking systems, steady pressure—not pumping—is recommended.
In addition to driving behavior, the department stresses the importance of preparing vehicles for winter conditions. Routine maintenance checks—such as inspecting brakes, tires, ignition systems, fluids, filters, and batteries—can reduce the chances of breakdowns in severe weather. Keeping the fuel tank full and ensuring adequate antifreeze levels are also key steps.
Residents are urged to carry emergency equipment including a spare tire, shovel, jumper cables, tire chains, and a bag of salt or cat litter for traction. A winter survival kit with items like flashlights, first-aid supplies, warm clothing, blankets, non-perishable food, and ice scrapers is recommended, especially for long-distance travel.
If drivers become stranded, the advisory instructs them to remain with their vehicle unless they are certain help is nearby. Flares or bright cloth can signal for assistance, and the engine may be run periodically for heat—provided the exhaust pipe is clear. A slightly open window can prevent snow from sealing the vehicle shut.
The Asotin Police Department encourages all motorists to plan ahead, monitor weather forecasts, and prioritize safety as winter weather intensifies across the region.
