One Dead After Explosion in Lewiston Parking Lot

LEWISTON, ID – One person died following an explosion reported at approximately 7:15 a.m. Saturday in the parking lot of the Old Navy store in Lewiston, according to city officials.

Preliminary information indicates the incident appears to have been accidental. The investigation is being led by Lewiston Fire Marshal Julian Sorrell, who said there is no indication the explosion was criminal in nature.

The explosion involved a U-Haul truck and caused damage within the blast radius to nearby businesses, including the Courtyard Marriott, Old Navy and adjacent areas. Officials said there was no subsequent fire following the explosion.

Initial findings indicate the vehicle was transporting stored materials, including flammable items such as gasoline and propane tanks.

The Nez Perce County Coroner’s Office identified the victim as Douglas R. Petersen, a 61-year-old man from Meridian, Idaho.

Authorities said there is no immediate threat to the public, but residents and visitors are asked to avoid the area while emergency crews and investigators complete their work. The investigation remains ongoing.

Responding agencies include the Lewiston Fire Department, Lewiston Police Department, Idaho State Police, the City of Lewiston Streets Division, and Nez Perce County.
