Washington flags to be lowered; memorial service set for fallen state trooper

OLYMPIA, WA — Washington Gov. Bob Ferguson has directed that Washington state and United States flags be lowered to half-staff at all state agency facilities on Saturday, Dec. 27, 2025, in honor of fallen Washington State Trooper Tara-Marysa Guting.

According to the governor’s directive, Guting, 29, Badge #720, was killed in the line of duty on Friday, Dec. 19, 2025. Flags may be lowered at the close of business on Friday, Dec. 26, and should remain at half-staff through the close of business or sunset on Saturday, Dec. 27, or until the morning of Monday, Dec. 29.

In a separate announcement, the Washington State Patrol confirmed it will host a memorial service for Trooper Guting at 1 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 27, at Life Center Central Campus, located at 1717 S. Union Ave. in Tacoma.

WSP officials said the service is being planned with Guting’s family and will be a family-focused event honoring her life and service. The memorial will not include a law enforcement procession and is intended for family, friends, and colleagues.

Due to limited space, the service will be livestreamed, with viewing links and additional details to be shared by the Washington State Patrol as plans are finalized. Agencies, businesses, and members of the public are encouraged to join in lowering flags in her honor.
