Idaho Parents Behind on Child Support Could Lose Passports Under New Policy

BOISE, ID — Idaho parents who owe large amounts of unpaid child support could soon lose their U.S. passports under a new federal enforcement policy taking effect nationwide.

The Idaho Department of Health and Welfare announced Thursday that the U.S. Department of State will begin revoking passports for noncustodial parents who are significantly behind on child support payments. The policy applies to parents who owe more than $100,000 in overdue support immediately, with the threshold dropping to $75,000 starting June 1.

According to the department, Idaho Child Support Services is currently monitoring about 150 noncustodial parents in the state who owe more than $100,000 in unpaid support. Officials said they do not yet know how many of those individuals currently hold passports.

“This is an exciting step in helping children thrive in Idaho because they have the full support of their parents,” DHW Director Juliet Charron said in a statement. “This will allow us to make sure parents are providing the court-ordered support their children need and are entitled to.”

The new measure adds passport revocation to several enforcement tools already used by Idaho Child Support Services. Existing enforcement actions include wage withholding, bank account garnishments, liens, reporting debts to credit bureaus, and suspending driver’s, hunting, fishing, and occupational licenses.

Officials said parents who receive notice that their passport has been revoked should contact the State Department using the information provided in their revocation letter. Once the debt is paid, they may apply for a new passport.

The Idaho Department of Health and Welfare said the policy is intended to help ensure children receive court-ordered financial support from both parents.
