Lewiston Sees Largest Population Drop in Idaho, Recent Data Shows

BOISE, ID – There were 57 cities in Idaho that lost population from 2023-2024.  Most of those cities have under 1,000 residents and saw only minimal losses.

According to recent data from the Idaho Department of Labor, Lewiston was the city with the largest population loss in the state.  Lewiston is the 11th most populated city Idaho.  The city’s population declined by 144 to 34,693.

The cumulative population growth of five Idaho cities from 2020-2024 ranked in the top 100 nationally — Caldwell was in 51st place at 21.5%, followed by Kuna in 54th (21%), Post Falls in 70th (18.6%), Meridian in 71st (18.6%) and Nampa in 91st (16.8%), according to recently released data from the U.S. Census Bureau.

The combined population of Idaho’s 202 incorporated cities grew by 1.8% from 2023-2024, outpacing the state’s overall growth of 1.5%.

Idaho is generally comprised of smaller cities with 85% below a population of 10,000.

Over half of the top 10 cities with the highest growth rates in the state from 2023-2024 were below this threshold, as seen in graphic below. The eastern Idaho city of Ammon surpassed 20,000 residents, making it the 15th in the state to do so.
