ASOTIN, WA – As the Fourth of July approaches, the Asotin Police Department is urging residents to celebrate safely and responsibly by following local firework regulations outlined in the city’s municipal code.
According to Asotin Municipal Code 8.22.030, consumer fireworks may only be discharged within city limits during the following dates and times:
- July 2–3: 9:00 a.m. to 11:00 p.m.
- July 4: 9:00 a.m. to 12:00 midnight
- July 5: 9:00 a.m. to 9:00 p.m.
Fireworks outside of these approved times are prohibited.
Only “Safe and Sane” consumer fireworks, as defined under RCW 70.77.136, are permitted. While some devices—such as firecrackers, bottle rockets, sky rockets, and missiles—can be purchased nearby, they are illegal to discharge within the city.
Permitted items typically include cylindrical and cone fountains, aerial spinners, smoke devices, Roman candles, sparklers, parachutes, wheels, and other novelties. Residents are advised to verify the legality of each firework before use.
Safety remains a top priority for law enforcement. The department provided several safety tips, including:
- Supervise children and keep fireworks away from alcohol use.
- Use fireworks outdoors in clear areas away from buildings and vehicles.
- Keep a hose and bucket of water nearby for emergencies and cleanup.
- Never re-light malfunctioning fireworks or carry fireworks in pockets.
- Wear safety glasses and light one item at a time.
- Properly soak and dispose of spent fireworks in metal containers.
Residents are reminded that FAA regulations prohibit fireworks in any form of air travel baggage. Illegal explosives such as M-80s and quarter sticks should be reported to local authorities.
Chief Monte Renzelman and the Asotin Police Department wish everyone a safe and happy Independence Day. For more information, visit www.cityofasotin.org or contact the department at 509-243-4411.
