LEWISTON, ID – A man was taken into custody Wednesday afternoon following reports of a shooting incident on U.S. Highway 95 on the Lewiston Hill, according to the Idaho State Police (ISP).
At approximately 4 p.m. on Wednesday, ISP received a 911 call reporting a white 2020 GMC Sierra pickup driving erratically southbound on the highway. The caller stated the driver was waving a handgun through the sunroof and that they believed gunfire was coming from the vehicle while it was still in Washington.
The driver allegedly fired at the caller’s vehicle near milepost 313, near the base of Lewiston Hill.
An ISP trooper later located the vehicle in Lewiston and conducted a felony traffic stop. The driver, a 58-year-old man from Sequim, Washington, was arrested without further incident.
Troopers learned that the incident had started earlier in Whitman County. The suspect reportedly fired a shot from his vehicle and later shot toward a Washington State Patrol trooper as he drove into Idaho. The suspect admitted to ISP troopers that he had intentionally fired his weapon.
He was booked into the Nez Perce County Jail on probable cause for aggravated assault. Further charges may be pursued by Washington State Patrol and the Whitman County Sheriff’s Office as their investigations continue.
No injuries were reported. During the arrest and investigation, US-12 was temporarily closed at 3rd Avenue North in Lewiston.
