Central Washington Arson Investigation Leads to Arrest After Three Structure Fires, $3M in Damage

UNION GAP, WA — A man was arrested on suspicion of arson following three separate structure fires reported late January 6 and early January 7 in Union Gap, according to the Union Gap Police Department.

Police say Suncomm Communications received multiple 911 calls at approximately 11:55 p.m. January 6 reporting a structure fire near Rudkin Road and Lilac Lane. Responding officers reported flames were visible from several blocks away.

While firefighters were working to extinguish that fire, a second structure fire was reported in the 1800 block of Rainer Place. That fire was quickly put out, though the building sustained significant damage.

At approximately 12:56 a.m. January 7, officers checking the area for potential arson suspects located a third fire. That fire was extinguished by a Yakima Police officer assisting with the investigation.

With assistance from surrounding law enforcement agencies, officers contacted and detained a male suspect. Police later arrested the individual on two counts of second-degree arson. The suspect was booked into the Yakima County Jail.

Authorities estimate total property damage from the three fires exceeds $3 million. Police say the commercial building near Rudkin Road and Lilac Lane was a total loss.

Due to the extent of the damage and the multiple fire locations, the Union Gap Police Department requested assistance from the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives. Investigators are working with the ATF, East Valley Fire Department, and the Yakima County Fire Marshal’s Office to complete the investigation.
